• Cryosurgery (cryotherapy) is applying extreme cold to destroy abnormal or diseased tissue, WITHOUT GENERAL ANESTHESIA. Cryotherapy has been in use for decades. The application of intense cold will result in the death of the target tissue while numbing surrounding sensory nerves, reducing pain and discomfort. The intense cold also kills bacteria and other germs.

How effective is cryosurgery?

• This procedure has a high success rate. Small warts and small skin tumors are usually cured with just one cryotherapy session. Tumors in the mouth often go into remission after one treatment and cause no further trouble. The technique is also used to remove extra eyelashes (distichiasis).

  This is not typical surgery. The procedure is done awake, takes approximately 10 minutes, with no anesthesia necessary. Sedation is done only if needed. There are no stitches-- the diseased tissue will die and fall off. Cost is very inexpensive-- First freezing session is $89 for 1 mass, 2 weeks later the mass is checked, and if an additional freezings are needed, $39 each. Freezing may not be appropriate for all masses-- this will be determined on the first exam.
